Dandruff it is not something to get rid of easily and not taking measures to treat it may lead to more serious conditions. These can extend to the skin on the face, to the eyes; they can cause damage of the scalp and hair loss. Dandruff is caused by yeast and fungi we get from the polluted environment and we overgrow, due to stress.
Depending on the origin (dry scalp, dermatitis or psoriasis) and the flakes (oily or dry), dandruff has to be treated different. It is always good to consult a dermatologist about this condition, as in serious cases, medication is recommended.
For simple dry scalp, caused by cheap hair products and environment, massage your scalp with skin moisturizer before shampooing and after, use a hair moisturizing conditioner. Oily scalps also favor the growth of yeast and fungi and sometimes just using a shampoo for very oily skin can make the dandruff go away. Sometimes lice can cause dandruff like symptoms and a completely different treatment is required.
The commercial shampoos contain ingredients meant to fight the yeast and the fungi: zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide. Coal tar is used for dandruff caused by lice and psoriasis. Salicylic acid helps in getting rid of the excess skin that sheds from the scalp. Always buy the shampoo that fits your needs. Using the wrong kind of shampoo will stimulate dandruff. Also, do not over wash your hair and scalp and avoid blow dryers. Get on a healthy diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, to boost your immunity to fungi and yeast.
For those who prefer natural remedies, the treatment has to be done in three steps, by treating the scalp with an oily mask before the wash and by treating the hair with appropriate moisturizing rinse and conditioner, after the wash.
Coconut, olive and cedar wood oils are the best to massage and hold into your scalp, before shampooing. In your shampoo, use traditional ingredients known to kill the fungi: tea tree oil, cone flower and red clover extracts.
For rinsing and moisturizing your hair, you have different options that you may use, alternatively. All of them contain a key ingredient, vitamin C:
1)Apply yogurt to your scalp and hair and let it nourish them for fifteen minutes. Remove with plenty of water and for the final rinse, use chamomile tea, which is antiseptic, boosts your scalp immunity, cleans well your hair and leaves it smelling great.
2)Simply massage your scalp and hair with a solution of half water, half lemon, leave it for fifteen minutes and rinse with water.
3)Make a solution, using an ounce of vinegar for every seven ounces of water. It may be any kind of vinegar, including apple cider vinegar. Massage it thoroughly into your scalp and hair and leave it in there, if your hair is not color treated, without final rinse. The smell of vinegar disappears once your hair is dry. Vinegar is the best known of all the ingredients (natural or not) to rebalance the PH of the skin and to maintain it at its appropriate levels.
For color treated here, after each final treatment, rinse well and apply coconut moisturizing conditioner, to your hair.
